Civic Zones - notes on cultural imaginaries
This project examines relations between issues of social disobedience, performance, occupation, and the civic.
In 2011 the disused theatre building of Embros in Athens, Greece, was occupied by the Mavili Collective. The occupancy took the form of a practical proposal, with a 12 day re-activation programme - a spectrum of activities bringing together artists, theoreticians, architects, and the general public.
In continuation with the modes and themes of that occupation, Civic Zones will explore histories and tactics of social disobedience in order to examine the potential of performance in today’s changing circumstances. This exploration will take the form of an ongoing dialogue between myself and others involved in multiple ways in the occupation of the Embros theatre.
